Electric vehicle and battery production surges in China 11-14-2020

Data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China shows that the total number of green cars produced in China during September 2020 was 139,057, which was a month-over-month rise of 31.7 percent. According to statistics from D1EV.COM, the capacity of batteries installed in electric vehicles in September 2020 was around 6.57 GWh, which was a year-over-year increase of 66.1% and a month-over-month growth of 28.1%. Additionally, this is also the third month in a row to show growth in the total capacity of batteries installed in electric vehicles.

The installed battery capacity of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in September was 6.07 GWh, while the installed capacity of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) was 489MWh, and the installed capacity of fuel cell vehicles (FCV) was 3.6 MWh.

Passenger cars and buses account for majority of new electric vehicles

In terms of types of BEV, in September, the number of passenger cars produced was 100,260, with 4.5GWh of installed battery capacity, which accounts for 68.6% of the total BEV installed battery capacity. The passenger vehicle installed battery capacity in September shows an increase of 1 percent compared to last month. The installed battery capacity of electric buses ranked second, which was 1.34 GWh, accounting for 17.3% of the total installed BEV installed battery capacity.

The number of battery-powered electric special purpose vehicle produced in September was 6,494, with a total installed battery capacity of 436.2 MWh, while the number of plug-in hybrid electric passenger vehicle produced in September was 26,382 in September, with a total installed battery capacity of 478.6 MWh.

Contemporary Amperex Technology to provide batteries for new electric vehicles

In terms of enterprises, Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL) supplied 2.69 GWh worth of batteries in September, the most of any enterprise in China, and an increase of 18.7% month-over-month. The produced battery capacity of BYD ranked second in September, with a month-over-month increase of 53.2%. Due to the fact that LG Chem partnered with Panasonic to produce batteries for the Tesla Model 3, LG Chem only produced a total capacity of 471.5MWh of batteries, with its production rank dropping to number four in China.

In September, the installed battery capacity of CATL’s passenger vehicles was 1478 MWh, which was an increase of 10% month-over-month. CATL offered batteries for 33 car enterprises and 82 types of vehicles, which was an increase of 10 types of vehicles compared to August.

In terms of installed battery capacity, the top-five complete set vehicle models in September are NIO ES6, Li Auto ONE, NIO ES8, ORA R1, and EMGRAND EV, which account for 15.5%, 11.2%, 7.7%, 5.2%, and 4.2%, respectively, of the total CATL battery capacity installed in vehicles during September, for a total of 43.7%. NIO, a major customer of CATL, produces several car models with relatively high installed battery capacity, with certain models as high as 80 kWh. As NIO continually produces more and more electric vehicles, NIO is expected to be a top 3 customer of CATL during the foreseeable future.
