China's power generation sector consumed 916.89 million mt (MT) of coal over Jan-Jun, up 1.5% YOY, a report by Beijing-based Dexin Yongming Consultation showed Friday.
Consumption slipped in May and June due to a decline in electricity demand and high hydropower output, the report said.
May coal consumption by the power sector fell 2.3% YOY to 147.74 MT, and in June fell 5.6% YOY to 144.70 MT.
China's hydropower output over Jan-Jun rose 17 billion kWh or 6.2% YOY to 291.2 billion kWh. Coal-fired power output edged up 28 billion kWh or 1.5% over the same period to 1,871.2 billion kWh.
China consumed 1.97 billion tonnes of coal in H1, up 2.8% YOY, Platts reported earlier. The country's coal output totaled 1.91 billion tonnes in H1, up 5.6% YOY, while its coal imports surged 65.9% over the same period to 139.85 MT and exports fell 34.1% to 5.77 MT.
