Zambia farmers to receive 100,000 tonnes of fertiliser
The Zambian government has bought more than 100,000 tonnes of fertiliser for distribution to farmers across the country during the 2009-10 season under the farmers' input support programme, the Times of Zambia reports Thursday (September 3).
The state-owned daily quoted Agriculture Minister Brian Chituwo as saying that, under the 2009-10 programme 534,000 farmers would be supported with up to 106,838 tonnes of fertiliser and 5,341 tonnes of planting seeds.
Zambia is a big corn producer and the government is trying to diversify its copper-reliant economy by increasing investment in the agriculture sector.
