China set to boost animal feed output

China plans to increase animal feed production by 23.5% to 200 million tonnes by 2015, from 162 million tonnes in 2010, the Ministry of Agriculture said Wednesday (Sep 21).

Demand for feed grain is expected to rise faster than grain supply - a situation that will restrict development in the animal husbandry sector, the ministry said in a statement.

Feed corn supply has swung from a balanced to tight, it said.

China's cornsupply was basically balanced before 2010, when China imported 1.6 million tonnes of corn, a 15-year high.

In 2010, China consumed more than 110 million tonnes of feed corn, it said, without providing a further breakdown of other grains used to make feed.
