China’s coking
coal
prices in major production bases may start a new round of decline in April, sources said, mainly due to persisting weak demand amid lackluster downstream demand.Market sources said China’s largest metallurgical coal producer -- Shanxi Coking Coal Group -- may cut prices by 30-50 yuan/t from April to ease high stocks; the group may set prices separately with each end user at varied extent of decline.Except for Shanxi Coking Coal, almost all coking coal producers have already cut prices by around 30 yuan/t during March, exerting great sales pressure on the group, which hasn’t published any prices adjustments. One Changzhi-based large producer may cut prices by 30 yuan/t in April, said one company insider, adding that sales of PCI coal were not that bad.One Yuncheng-based state-owned miner said the ex-works price of lean coal was reduced by 20 yuan/t from April to 650 yuan/t, inclusive of VAT.One miner from Xiaoyi, Luliang said end users have requested a 30-35 yuan/t cut in high-sulphur coal prices, with which he has basically agreed. One source with a Shandong-based steel maker said they have recently cut the purchase price of washed gas coal by 20 yuan/t, with ex-works price of washed gas coal (G value 75) at 645 yuan/t, VAT included."The steel market is recovering slowly, but the decline in coking coal prices may not stop until July," said the source. However, some small producers still planned to maintain prices steady amid low stocks. One Linfen-based miner kept the price of low-sulphur primary coking coal unchanged at 700 yuan/t with VAT, ex-stocks, saying that he may not lower prices in April, given the low stocks at neighboring coking plants and mines.
