The Workshop on National Pesticide Quality Supervision and Inspection was held in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province during April 13-14, 2012. Deputy Director-General Wei Qiwen for the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals of the Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA) addressed the opening ceremony.

In his speech, Wei fully affirmed the latest achievements in pesticide quality supervision and inspection, and made clear requirements for further supervision and inspection and reinforced fighting against illegal pesticide production and business operation.

Wei emphasized that in light of local agricultural production and pesticide application, pesticide quality supervision and inspection should focus on pesticide application to vegetables, fruit trees, tea trees, paddy rice, wheat and other major crops by random sampling. Supervision and inspection should be carried out even at farmers' markets at township-level, targeting at suspected pesticides.

This initiative requires cooperation among line sectors and cooperation through industry line of pesticide regulation, and requires closely linking random inspection with investigation and punishment on violations. Centering on goals for increasing grain output and farmer's income as well as ensuring no major quality and safety incidents, this initiative is aimed at better serving agricultural production.

In the implementation of supervision and inspection, Wei also called on awareness-raising, mechanism building, quality control, law enforcement, advocacy, and technique development to consequently bring into full play the efficacy.

The contents of the training include work plan for 2012, procedures and requirements, testing illegal additives, pesticide incident appraisal, case study and reporting requirements related with pesticide quality supervision and inspection. At the closing of Workshop, the participants were examined.

The Workshop was chaired by Mr. Liu Shaoren, Director of Supervision Division of ICAMA. Deputy Director-General Bai Yiqin for Shaanxi provincial Department of Agriculture attended the Workshop. Nearly 100 representatives from pesticide control agencies nationwide attended the training course.
