China is the largest sugar alcohol production base in the world and sugar alcohols produced in China are not only consumed in domestic market but also exported to overseas market. Sugar alcohols usually include sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol, mannitol, erythritol, lactitol, isomaltitol and so on. Sorbitol, xylitol and maltitol are the three major sugar alcohols traded in the international market, whose import and export volumes took up more than 90% of total trade volume of China's sugar alcohol in 2013 and sometimes, the proportion was even higher. Other sugar alcohols such as mannitol and erythritol are traded in small quantities and develop fast in recent years.
Sugar alcohols produced in China are exported to a lot of countries and regions, mostly to countries. For instance, the import volume to the top 10 export destinations of sorbitol captures about 79% of the total sorbitol exported in 2013
In 2013, sugar alcohol trade industry had faced a lot of troubles. On one hand, the unsatisfactory performance of the major economies pulled down the demand for sugar alcohols to some extent. On the other hand, the price of sucrose continued to decline and as a result the demand for sugar alcohols from downstream such as food, beverage and candy industries decreased. Despite of the difficulties, sugar alcohol enterprises had made great efforts to overcome this predicament.
