As a big producer and exporter of phosphorus products, China plays an important role in the international phosphorus industry. Major phosphorus products in China include phosphorus ore, phosphate fertilizer and yellow phosphorus, etc.
By 2015, the global reserves of phosphorus ore were approximately 68,705 million tonnes, while the reserves in China accounted for 4.8% of the total. The distribution of phosphate reserves in China is extremely uneven, which is mainly distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Sichuan and Hunan provinces, accounting for over 80% of the total reserves in China.
Due to the irreplaceability and scarcity of phosphorus resources, China has implemented a strict industry clean-up and admittance system for phosphorus ore mining. The approval process for exploration and conversion will take 8-10 years. In addition, China is limiting the export of phosphorus ore resources, and the export volume of China's phosphorus ore has been greatly reduced. In 2011, China exported 637,790 tonnes of phosphorus ore. By 2016, the export volume of phosphorus ore has been reduced to 243,337 tonnes.
China's phosphorus ore production has grown steadily. In 2017, China's phosphorus ore witnessed an output of 123 million tonnes, with an overall capacity of more than 200 million tonnes. At present, except for a small amount of exports, China's phosphorus ore is almost entirely supplied to domestic enterprises, of which 77% are used for processing and production of phosphate fertilizers, and 16% are used for the production of yellow phosphorus.
The major downstream demand for phosphorus ore comes from phosphate fertilizer production. The main subdivisions of phosphate fertilizers are monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP), with market share accounting for over 80% of fertilizer consumption. China's total output of phosphate fertilizer accounts for about 34% of the world's total, ranking first. One-quarter to one-third of phosphate fertilizer were exported to India, Brazil and Australia, etc. As China has implemented the "Zero Fertilizer Zero Growth" policy in recent years, the growth of phosphate fertilizers in China is limited, so the international market has a greater impact on the degree of phosphorus fertilizer boom. The domestic DAP is mainly exported to India, while MAP is mainly exported to Brazil.
