近年来,在欧洲，作物种植在产量提高、环保以及绿色安全对作物保护方法提出更高要求。到2030年欧盟谷物种植面积将下降至5,100万公顷，主要源于硬粒小麦以及大麦种植面积的减少。软粒小麦的种植面积缓慢增长，欧盟小麦种植总面积再2030年将达到2,100万公顷，比2020年下降1.6%。小麦的主产国法国和德国在近几年的种植面积有所下降，而波兰种植面积在增加。玉米的种植面积在整个欧盟范围内在增加，预计将达到880万公顷，以适应饲料及工业需求。其他谷物（燕麦，黑麦，高粱等）类作物的种植面积比较稳定。在种植面积下降的大趋势下，欧洲需要保持稳定且增长的产量，则需要提高种植效率。在提高种植效率过程中，农作物保护方法起着至关重要的作用。
